The Farrah-Clemens-Moses Families

James Farrah, born in Ireland, settled in Culpeper county, Va., and married Ann McCue, of Scotch descent. They had nine children.

Samuel, the oldest child, married Mary Rodgers, widow, whose maiden name was Mary McCue. They had one child, Elizabeth Farrah. The family removed from Virginia to near Cane Ridge, Ky., prior to 1800. Elizabeth Farrah married John Clemens, of Irish origin, son of John Clemens, born in Ireland. There were six children, viz. : Farrah, Sarah, Jane, Martha, Perry and Dorcas Clemens.

Dorcas Clemens, born near Cane Ridge, Ky., November 8, 1800, married John Moses, of German-Swiss ancestry, born in Bedford county, Penn., October 23, 1796. The family removed to Delaware county, Ohio. They were married in Scioto township, Delaware county, May 27, 1827. Their children, all born in Delaware, Ohio, were:

1. Adolphus Clemens Moses, born August 3, 1828, died at Foreman’s Ranch, now Linden, Calif., May 17, 1860, unmarried.

2. Edwin Ruthorn Moses, born July 28, 1830; maried Hannah Mudgett, widow, October 19, 1870, no issue ; died in Woodland. Calif., July, 1882.

3. Marshall Walter Moses, born February 12, 1833; married Nancy Stailey, in Waldo township, Marion county, Ohio, March 13, 1855; died in Delaware, Ohio, April 11, 1893. They had five children. One daughter died in infancy. Mary Moses married the Rev. Win. P. Thurston. The other children were: Albert, living in East Orange, N. J. ; Edwin, living in Canada, and John C, living in Birmingham, Ala.

4. Albert Ingham Moses, born August 8, 1839 ; married Sarah Gross, of Troy township, Delaware county, Ohio, December 23, 1875. They have two children, Gould and Walter Moses. Albert I. Moses’ address is Delaware, Ohio, R. F. D.

5. John Farrah Moses, born October 23, 1841, was twice married. The first marriage, October 19, 1870, was to Jane Cook Goble, who died November 19, 1875; a son was born and died the same date, in Collettsburg, Ky. The second marriage was to Annie Caldwell, in Rushville, Indiana, September 18, 1878. Of this marriage one child, Mary Moses, born in Rushville July 3, 1879, married Ernest Jackson Glessner, October 14, 1908, in Rushville, Ind. ; issue, Martha Anna Glessner, born in Fort Collins, Colorado, December 4, 1909.

Other children of John and Elizabeth Clemens:

Farrah Clemens lived and died in or near Clinton, Ill., leaving several children. His descendants are scattered in the West.

Jane Clemens married John Mann. Their children, Azro, Hester and x\daline, I think all are dead. The family home was in West Canaan, Madison county, Ohio.

Sarah Clemens married Charles T. Austin. They lived and died in West Canaan, Ohio. Their children were Nancy, married – Lewis ; Martha, married – Taylor ; Charles T., Edwin and William, all married and had children. Martha (Clemens) Taylor had one daughter, who married a Dr. Van Sant, of Brooklyn, Morgan county, Ind., and died there, leaving one daughter, whose name I have never heard.

Martha x Clemens married – Guy. I have no other facts concerning them.

Perry Clemens married, and I know, or rather knew, of one son, who lived in Plain City, Ohio. The father lived in Lacon, Marshall county, Ill., where there were several others of the name of Clemens. J. F. M.
